Rugao, a county-level city of Nantong, is home to a traditional-style street known as Dongda Street, which is located in the eastern corner of the ancient city.

The narrow street has a length of less than 500 meters and a width of just over 2 meters, providing only enough room for two horses to pass side by side.

It is crisscrossed by alleys such as Gejia Lane, renowned for its paintings, and Xiunu Lane, famous for embroidery, while also being home to the residences of several famous historical figures, such Liu Lanqing, a scholar in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The street is home to many century-old buildings, meticulously crafted with exquisite carvings, exuding an ancient charm. There is a serene beauty to be found here, a feeling of being isolated from the surrounding bustle, and a strong sense of tranquility.

The alleys retain the architectural styles of times long past. Many shops on Dongda Street still feature a front shop and a rear residence, integrating characteristics from various historical periods. As the morning sunlight streams into the houses and a new day begins, the friendly greetings of neighbors, the laughter of children, and the sound of clothes being pounded by the ancient well all fill the street with a sense of warmth.

In contrast to a busy commercial street, Dongda Street exudes a timeless charm. The labyrinthine alleys are steeped in history, and each corner tells a story of daily life. The original residents still call this place home, and the presence of mops by the doors, shoes on windowsills, and clay pots with lotus flowers highlight their enduring love for this street.
