The National Forestry and Grassland Administration recently announced its first list of important habitats for terrestrial wildlife in China, including three in Nantong, Jiangsu province.

The 214-square kilometer nature reserve at the Qidong Yangtze Estuary Wetland is a haven for migratory birds. Yangtze Estuary is a significant stopover for birds in the Asian-Pacific region, bringing some distinctive species to the reserve.

Rudong Xiaoyangkou Tidal Flat Wetland is a habitat for spoonbill sandpipers as well as an important stop for migratory birds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, including at least seven international endangered species.

Capable of providing abundant food, Nantong Coastal Wetland Migratory Bird Habitat in Haimen pools large amounts of species under key protection such as Larus saundersi, Chinese egrets, and Eurasian curlews.

With numerous rare, vulnerable, and severely endangered bird species, the three wetlands have developed strict measures to protect them. These measures are also helpful in regulating wetland structure and function, and even promoting the restoration of ecosystem functions.

Home to about 522,400 hectares of wetlands and an ever-increasing number of birds, Nantong established 69 wetland reserves last year–17 more than in 2022. Local authorities have also taken measures to protect wetlands and improve the environment in these precious habitats.
