Rural agriculture thrives in Tongzhou
Tongzhou district in Nantong, Jiangsu province has been promoting the development of rural agriculture and achieved remarkable success.
For seven consecutive years, the district has been honored as an advanced district in efficient agriculture development in Jiangsu.
The district's Xuyuan village exemplifies Tongzhou's progress with its dynamic approach to nurturing distinct industries. The village has developed industries around bonsai appreciation, fruit and vegetable picking, traditional Chinese medicine cultivation, agricultural product processing, koi fish farming, and rural tourism. This approach has formed an integrated model of trade, industry, and agriculture, combining cultivation and breeding.
The village is currently home to eight family farms and one provincial-level leading agricultural industrialization enterprise, which provides employment for over 600 people. In 2022, the village's operating income totaled 2.32 million yuan ($322,911) and will reach an estimated 3.05 million yuan this year.
Dongping village has focused on cultivating and developing the asparagus industry, creating a complete chain of research, breeding, seedling cultivation, planting, and sales for the asparagus.
The village currently cultivates over 3,200 mu (213.33 hectares) of asparagus, with an annual output value exceeding 57 million yuan. The per-mu income is more than 13,000 yuan, leading to an annual increase in income of over 50,000 yuan for residents.
