Haimen district in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province has in recent years taken a series of actions to protect its arable land.

The district plans to cultivate a total of 2,000 mu of farmland this year using the arable land requisition-compensation balance system.

Personnel have been deployed to carry out land consolidation and reclamation work, survey the distribution of ditches and ponds in each village, and communicate with village committees and surrounding residents about suitable reclamation sites, said Zhang Gaofeng, a local official.

The district is currently home to 686,800-mu (45,786.67 hectares) of arable fields.

Haimen has also taken measures, including building irrigation systems, promoting the use of organic fertilizers, and establishing monitoring stations for agricultural conditions, to build 920-mu of high-standard farmland.

In addition, the district has been cultivating farmland shelterbelt forest and developing circular agriculture to protect the ecological environment of its arable fields.
