Seyuan Garden in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, is a historical and cultural site for patriotism education that serves as a great place for people to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The garden is well known, as Zhang Jian (1853-1926), who was born in Haimen, Nantong, was buried there. Zhang was a renowned Chinese entrepreneur, politician and educator. He is considered one of the pioneers of China's industrial modernization and founded Tongzhou Normal College - the first normal school in modern China - in 1902. He set up Nantong Museum - the first museum on the Chinese mainland - in 1905.
Zhang made great contributions to the development of China's industries, education and public welfare undertakings. The Nantong Museum and Zhang's former residence have now been turned into a base for patriotic education.
The garden is pleasant, elegant and peaceful, and is surrounded by thousands of precious trees, including dove trees, Japanese cedars, Chinese yew and tussah needle. Seyuan Garden has the best air quality and the highest density of air ions among all parks in China. It is regarded as one of "Nantong's green lungs" and has the largest botanical garden in Nantong.
