Rudong, a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, has in recent years been making efforts to boost the development of education for seniors, local media reported.

Efforts are being made to improve the environment and curriculum at Rudong Senior-Citizen University.

Since being established in 1988, the university has served the elderly for more than 30 years.

Last year, authorities spent more than 3 million yuan ($434,627) renovating the university's facilities and upgrading its equipment.

According to authorities, they renovated 12 classrooms and added one set of sound equipment, four multimedia machines, and 40 computers.

In addition, 10 washrooms at the university have been renovated to meet the needs of the elderly.

The improved school environment has attracted more seniors.

Last autumn, the university offered 49 classes and 1,200 students enrolled.

The university has also hired many professionals to give lectures to seniors.

This year, the university is offering 38 courses, including courses on literature and history, housekeeping, fitness, painting and calligraphy, music and dance, instrumental music, and information technology, to meet the various needs of seniors.
