Rare bird spotted in Qidong
A larus relictus was recently sighted wintering in Qidong, a county-level city of Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, local media reported on Feb 18.
Larus relictus is designated as a national first-class protection species and IUCN vulnerable species.
Every autumn, the breeding population of larus relictuses in Ordos leaves north-central China and travels eastward to spend the winter in Bohai Bay.
The appearance of the larus relictus can be attributed to the city's vast coastal flats, clean water sources, rich vegetation, and the atmosphere of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
The city has been adhering to the concept of "lucian waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", giving priority to ecology and strengthening green development to protect biodiversity.
According to a survey of biodiversity background resources carried out in the city in 2019, 1,337 species had been recorded.
