Hai'an, a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, has seen great progress in improving its environment over the past year, local media reported.

One of the efforts made by Hai'an to improve its environment is boosting the green development of local enterprises.

Last year, authorities reduced the waste emissions of 125 enterprises.

To encourage more enterprises to get involved in green development, authorities have also provided subsidies of more than 30 million yuan ($4.42 million) to help enterprises update their equipment.

In 2022, the quality of 100 percent of sampled surface water in the county was classified as Grade III or above. Grade III is the third-highest level in a five-tier quality system for water in China.

In addition, the level of improvement in air quality in Hai'an ranked second in the city. The proportion of days with good air quality in 2022 was 82 percent.

Due to its efforts to improve its environment, Hai'an in 2022 received approval to build a demonstration county for the improvement of the rural living environment.
