More than 70 embroidery works from Nantong in East China's Jiangsu province were showcased at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing from Nov 12 to 23.

These embroidery works include masterpieces by Suzhou embroidery expert Shen Shou (1874-1921) and her students, as well as fine works made after 1950.

Zhang Wei, dean of the School of Art of Nantong University, said that it is the responsibility of every cultural worker to protect and promote embroidery, a significant symbol of traditional Chinese culture.

He noted that his school will further tap into the cultural resources of Nantong, create more fine art works, and cultivate more art professionals.

Nantong emulated embroidery originated from Suzhou embroidery and is mainly popular in Nantong, Suzhou, and Changzhou in East China's Jiangsu province.

It was created by Suzhou embroidery expert Shen Shou (1874-1921) and is thus known as Shen embroidery. In 2008, it was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage item.

The exhibition was sponsored by the Publicity Department of the CPC Nantong Municipal Committee, Nantong University, Nantong municipal bureau of culture, broadcasting, television, and tourism, and Nantong Federation of Literary and Art Circles and organized by the School of Art of NTU and Nantong Museum.

The exhibition will later be held in Shanghai, Tianjin, and Nantong.
