By the end of 2021, Haimen had a permanent population of 993,000. The registered population was 982,724, 5,976 fewer than the previous year. The birth and mortality rates were 4.04 percent and 9.44 percent, respectively, putting the natural population growth rate at -5.4 percent.

The district is well-known as a town of science and technology, textiles, construction and longevity. It was included in the top 100 industrial counties of China in 2020 and ranked 13th among the top 100 county-level cities in terms of basic economic competitiveness and 21th among the top 100 districts in terms of comprehensive competitiveness.

Haimen reported a 9.4 percent year-on-year growth in GDP in 2021, reaching 156.93 billion yuan ($24.69 billion). Its general public budget revenue was 7.9 billion yuan, up 7.5 percent. The actual received foreign investment was $360 million.

Its industrial taxable sales of industrial enterprises above designated size amounted to 98.74 billion yuan. Service taxable sales stood at 67.32 billion yuan and the output of the construction industry was valued at 223.3 billion yuan.

The import-export volume was valued at 32.24 billion yuan, up 36.4 percent.
