Haimen-developed unmanned mini bus makes its debut

Updated: 2019-04-03

Key technologies that drive the unmanned intelligent driving system on mini buses used at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2019 were developed by Wu Gansha from Haimen, Nantong, in eastern Jiangsu province, according to local media.

The BFA annual conference that concluded in southern China's island province of Hainan on March 29 attracted more than 2,000 distinguished guests from more than 60 countries.

In order to present the concept of unmanned shared transport in the future, five domestically produced self-owned brands have achieved so-called level 4 altitude automatic driving in a 5G-covered environment.

In the auto industry level 4 is regarded as fully autonomous driving, although a human driver can still intervene to secure control, and the vehicle has a cockpit. Experts say that in level 4, vehicles are able to handle most driving situations independently.

Among the featured auto brands at the conference, two unmanned electric mini buses used the key technologies from the intelligent driving system provided by Wu Gansha’s company.

The two mini buses are equipped with an on-board computer and sensors. They feature light detection and ranging, or LIDAR, devices, on the roof and around the cabin. There is no steering wheel, automatic pedal, or accelerator pedal in the vehicle, their absence underling the high degree of automatic driving.

All the sensors on the mini bus can receive prompts from roadside equipment. After obtaining the information, the vehicle can accurately identify traffic lights, turns, and road construction of the road surface. The company said that after comprehensive analysis, the mini bus offers an optimal and safe route and direction. Even on steep slopes, and with curved roads, the vehicle is not bumpy.

The minibus has a cruising speed of 30 kilometers per hour and a top speed of 80 km per hour.
