A bust of Zhang Jian is photographed in the scenic area’s memorial hall. Zhang Jian, born in Haimen, Nantong, was a renowned Chinese entrepreneur, politician and educator. He is considered to have been one of the pioneers of Chinese modernization. He founded Tongzhou Normal College in 1902, which was the first normal school in modern China, and he set up Nantong Museum in 1905 –– the first museum on the Chinese mainland.
