An important scientific project being led by Shi Bin, a scientist from Haimen, Nantong, East China’s Jiangsu province, won the National Science and Technology Progress Award, according to a report in Haimen Daily, on Jan 9.

The Key Technology and Application of Distributed Optical Fiber Monitoring in Geological Engineering project is the result of 20 years of dedicated research work and development. Shi and his team have managed to establish a distributed optical fiber monitoring technology system for geological engineering, and achieved new breakthroughs in geological engineering disaster mechanisms and theoretical criteria.

The research has led to the development of new technology and equipment, with full independent intellectual property rights.

And as a result of Shi’s work, over 40 types of products have been introduced to the market, as well as being applied in more than 300 important projects at home and abroad.

Shi Bin, born in October 1961, is a former student of Haimen Wannian Middle School. From 1979 to 1995, he pursued his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at the department of geology in Nanjing University. He is currently still at the university, working as a distinguished professor and doctoral supervisor.

He boasts a long career in the research and evaluation of engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. He is the author of more than 400 articles. More than 100 of his papers have been retrieved by the SCI and EI. And he is the holder of 28 national invention patents.
