After more than 70 days of offshore operations, the most extended sea-crossing cable project in Jiangsu province has completed the installation of two 34-kilometer-long cables for the 110 kV substation on Yangguang Island at Yangkou Port, Rudong.
The project ensures timely detection of potential issues to safeguard the entire cable system by using advanced monitoring devices such as infrared cameras, temperature sensors, fault locators, and ground current measurement instruments.
According to Xu Pengpeng, a safety and quality supervision specialist at the State Grid Rudong County Power Supply Company, these devices are expected to be installed by the end of September, with the entire substation set to be operational by the end of October.
Yangguang Island, covering an area of 3 square kilometers, currently hosts four LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals, which collectively have an annual handling capacity of 7 million metric tons. By 2027, the island's annual capacity is projected to exceed 26 million tons.
Given the critical importance of the LNG terminals, the company placed significant emphasis on ensuring the safety and stability of the cables from the initial design stage. Xu highlighted the vulnerability of cable joints as inherently weak points susceptible to faults. In response, the project extended the length of each cable to minimize the number of joints, mitigating potential vulnerabilities.
Additionally, the project introduced an innovative telescopic device that incorporates flexible supports installed at intervals along the cable route. These supports adjust to bridge vibrations, minimizing the impact of internal stress and tension on the cables.
