Nantong in Jiangsu province recently released a plan to achieve the city's carbon peak goal, local media reported.

The plan comprises six initiatives in the domains of industry, green energy, transportation, urban-rural construction, science and innovation, and more.

The period from 2021 to 2025 is designated by the plan as a time during which a green, low-carbon, and circular economic system will take shape in Nantong, resulting in greatly improved energy use efficiency in key industries and effectively controlled increase in carbon dioxide emissions.

By 2030, the proportion of the output values of high-tech industries and strategic emerging industries within the total output value of industrial enterprises above a designated size in Nantong will reach over 50 percent and 45 percent respectively. Advanced and applicable energy-efficient and low-carbon process technologies, equipment, and products will be promoted in the city, alongside efforts to establish a number of zero-carbon enterprises and zero-carbon industrial parks.

The plan also proposes ramping up efforts to develop non-fossil energy. By 2035, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation in Nantong is expected to reach more than 6 million kilowatts. The city will also increase its storage capacity of natural gas and build 10-million-metric ton LNG receiving stations.

By 2025, the proportion of railway and water transport of bulk cargo in Nantong's major coastal ports will exceed 95 percent and the city's public transport will become low-carbon and intelligent.

The green coverage rate of urban built-up areas in Nantong will amount to 40 percent and the city will house an additional 1.6 million square meters of green buildings by 2035.

Nantong will also strengthen its support to technological breakthroughs in areas including wind power, photovoltaic and other new energy, energy storage equipment, and smart grid technology and equipment.

The city will actively advocate a simple, moderate, green, and low-carbon lifestyle and consumption.
