Thirteen international guests hopped on their bikes and rode 78 kilometers along Qidong's coastline on June 7, discovering a unique blend of coastal charm and industrial energy in the county-level city of Nantong.
These riders are engineers and technicians based in Qidong, all working on global projects at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry.
Before coming to China, Arnfinn from Norway knew nothing about Qidong and expected a typical industrial zone. But after living here for nearly a year, he found a quiet, clean riverside town with moist air and tidy streets — perfect for living.
Martin from Denmark arrived six months ago with his wife and three children. He has since found the community very welcoming and his family quickly adapted to local life. An active soccer and biking enthusiast, Martin often plays sports with his colleagues in Qidong.
Though his family is not with him, Luo Guoxiang from Singapore doesn't feel lonely. Since arriving in Qidong this February, he has been well taken care of by local colleagues who showed him where to shop and eat. He is frequently invited to dinners and has made new friends through cycling.
Qidong sends massive offshore equipment to oceans around the world, but its greatest attraction may be its quiet charm and comfortable way of life. These international guests, who will leave after their projects are finished, all share a common feeling: they want to come back again and again.
