China, known as the birthplace of porcelain, also saw the emergence of techniques used to mend porcelain with cramps.

Historically, people hesitated to discard broken bowls, pots, and jars. Under the deft hand of a mender, these broken vessels could be restored to a condition as good as new.

In the Nantong region, such mending techniques have existed and been passed down since the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

The tools historically used by menders in the past were quite simple, with three-leather strap diamond knives being indispensable. In addition to traditional tools, modern menders often incorporate contemporary tools such as blowtorches.

Mending porcelain techniques were categorized into rough work and skilled work. The former refers to the mending of everyday items, while the latter focuses on restoring rare and antique porcelain, primarily for dignitaries.

The tools used for skilled work are delicate and exquisite, and the skillfully mended antiques sometimes are more beautiful than before.
