The groundbreaking ceremony for China Resources Gas Group's LNG terminal at Yangkou Port in Rudong, Nantong, Jiangsu province was held on June 21. The 8-billion-yuan ($1.11 billion) terminal is expected to increase the annual LNG unloading capacity at the port to nearly 30 million metric tons, making Yangguang Island, where the port is located, the largest offshore LNG hub in the country.

A key construction project in Jiangsu province, the terminal will be built by Jiangsu Flagstar Investment Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China Resources, and Jiangsu Yangkou Port Construction and Development Group.

The terminal has two phases. The first phase, expected to be completed in 2026, features four 200,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks, wharfs, water supply and drainage facilities, and other supporting facilities. The wharf will be capable of accommodating LNG vessels with a maximum capacity of 266,000 cubic meters, while its annual unloading capacity is likely to reach 6.5 million tons.

The second phase involves the construction of two more 200,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks along with necessary supporting facilities. The entire project is expected to supply 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

China Resources has been focusing on green development and has carried out a series of green projects with Yangkou port, such as one fishery-photovoltaics project that started in 2021.

Rudong county has made a decade's worth of efforts to develop the LNG industry in Yangguang Island, and the annual unloading capacity of the island has surpassed 10 million tons. Chen Huiyu, Party secretary of Rudong, said that the county will form a specialized and dedicated service team to ensure the smooth progress of ongoing projects.
