For example, one of his works shows a pair of swans dancing over the Haohe River in Nantong, just like the ancient Tang Dynasty (618-907) beauties performing the renowned Rainbow and Feather Dress dance. The photo helped Mao secure an international award.

Mao uses his camera to record changes in Nantong's natural environment. "The city has experienced tremendous changes over the years," said the photographer. "The five mountains – Junshan, Jianshan, Langshan, Ma'an, and Huangni – boast an increasing number of wild birds."

In addition to his own photography career, Mao has also helped cultivate young photographers in Nantong with the hope of seeing more photos taken in Nantong winning international awards.
