Tour century-old buildings in Rugao

Rugao in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, is currently home to 33 historic buildings with cultural, artistic, and research value.

Here are some of the buildings.

No 43 residence on Dongdajie Street

The residence is a courtyard house with sophisticated carving patterns on wood doors and windows and the floors of the rooms are covered with grey-green bricks in the style of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

No 1 residence southeast of Yingchun Bridge

The architectural style of these dwellings resembles that during the Republic of China (1912-1949) period. The residence used to function as a museum to showcase the crime scene investigation skills of Li Changyu, a skilled detective born in Rugao in 1938.

Former residence of Liu Lanqing

The former residence of Liu Lanqing, who passed the imperial examination at the county level, was established in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and its entrance door is classic Rugao-style. All the buildings in the residence were constructed with fine materials and their doors, windows, and partition boards are engraved with beautiful patterns.

Built in the Qing Dynasty, this residence is an intact classical courtyard house including main rooms facing north, wing rooms on both sides of the main rooms, and rooms opposite the main rooms.
