The renovation of ancient buildings in the South Guandi Temple Lane of the Xi'nanying Historic Block in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, is expected to be completed in July.

Covering an area of 3,800 square meters, the ancient buildings from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911) include two interconnected mansions and 23 separate buildings.

As the largest and most valuable ancient buildings in the Xi'nanying Historic Block, they were listed as a cultural relic under provincial protection in 1982.

During the renovation, all major intact timber frames are being protected, while worn down ones are being replaced using the same construction materials and the same traditional techniques.

The Eastern Sedan Chair Hall is the most distinctive piece of architecture among the buildings and special attention is being given to it during renovation.

The hall functions as a reception room where hosts and guests step out of the sedan or hosts receive regular guests.

With expensive construction materials and exquisite woodwork designs, the western mansion's hall is also a focus of the renovation.
