The 8,500-square-meter former residence of Han Guojun (1857-1942) in Hai'an, Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, was established in 1906 and has four courtyards and one garden.

The intact buildings integrate traditional Chinese and western architectural styles.

Built in a traditional Chinese style, the four courtyards are connected via corridors and their eaves are decorated with 35 exquisite brick carving works. The train carriage-style drawing room in the backyard garden is built in a western style and paved with colored glaze tiles.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Han's former residence functioned as a workplace for government departments, and in 1988 the Hai'an Museum was established at the residence. Three years ago, the Hai'an government established a new Hai'an Museum near the residence.

In 1982, the former residence was listed as a cultural site under the protection of the provincial government, and in 2013 it was placed under national protection.

Born in Hai'an, Han worked as governor of both Anhui and Jiangsu provinces in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and contributed to the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).

Han also authored numerous books and edited ancient books in his later years.
