Nantong in East China's Jiangsu province has been ranked first in the province in the number of days with good air quality for four consecutive years, local media reported on Jan 15.

In 2021, the proportion of days with good air quality in the city was 88.2 percent, the highest in Jiangsu, and its PM 2.5 concentration was 30 micrograms per cubic meter, a year-on-year decrease of 11.8 percent.

These remarkable achievements can be attributed to the following efforts made by the city.

Nantong has established air quality control stations around the city and designated a person in charge for each station. They are required to formulate a plan to improve air quality in the local area.

Construction sites are required to reduce flying dust, residents are not allowed to set off fireworks in certain areas, and kitchen ventilators for catering service providers are required to be cleaned regularly.

Last year, the city encouraged 34 companies to equip themselves with highly efficient waste gas treatment facilities and 173 companies have replaced their raw materials with environmentally friendly ones.

Nantong also weeded out 2,436 diesel-powered trucks last year, which is expected to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide, volatile organic chemicals, and particulate matter by 1,300 metric tons, 58 tons, and 17 tons, respectively.

The city also uses technologies, including satellite remote sensing and drones, to control and monitor air quality.
