Eight water conservancy projects in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province were recently listed as provincial heritage items, according to the water resources department of Jiangsu.

Water conservancy heritage items refer to remains of the water culture system which has great influence or brings benefits to local residents.

Here are parts of the listed water conservancy projects in Nantong.

Hongjia River Memorial in Hai'an

The Hongjia River Memorial was built this year to commemorate the flood relief efforts of Zhouduo villagers. In the 1970s, Zhouduo village built an embankment on Hongjia River which put an end to floods.

Chengdong Water Passage in Rugao

Located in Shuihui Garden, the Chengdong Water Passage was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to connect the southern and eastern parts of Rugao. The passage played a significant role in transportation and drainage.

Fan Causeway in Rudong

The 47.5-kilometer Fan Causeway was built in 1171 and its remains in Lifeng town span 600 meters.

Zhang Causeway

Built in 1918 by renowned Nantong native Zhang Jian, the Zhang Causeway spans more than 50 km from Tongzhou to Dongzao Port in Haimen. The Haimen section of the causeway is still intact.

To ensure smooth land reclamation and improve the safety of local residents, Zhang Jian built the tidal flap wall in coastal areas in 1919 after seeking advice from hydraulic experts in the Netherlands.

Jiuyugang Floodgate

Nearly 20,000 workers spent six months in 1958 building the Jiuyugang Floodgate which solved the waterlogging problem in Nantong.
