Banyao kite flying competition kicks off in Tongzhou Bay

A banyao kite flying competition was held in Tongzhou Bay Demonstration Zone, Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province on Nov 19.

The competition was attended by more than 20 representative inheritors of banyao kite making and students from universities located in Tongzhou Bay Demonstration Zone.

In addition to banyao kites, there were also various other kites, including a 180-meter dragon shaped kite and tumbling kites, flown at the competition.

Nantong's banyao kite making skills was listed among the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage items in 2006. Banyao kites are large, flat, as well as whistling kites with hexagonal frames adorned with exquisite decorations and vibrant colors.

Yang Zhibing, an inheritor of banyao kite making who was born in the 1980s, noted that banyao kite makers should try to make innovations to preserve the banyao kite culture in Nantong and to help more people learn about the special kite culture.
