3 Nantong natives elected as academicians

Three scientists from Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, according to a notice released by the two academies on Nov 18.

Wan Baonian, a researcher at the Institute of Plasma Physics of CAS in Hefei, Anhui province, has been selected as an academician of CAS.

Wan has been engaged in the research of magnetic confinement fusion and has in recent years made remarkable achievements in high-performance, steady state, long pulse plasma research which has improved China's influence in the MCF field.

Liu Jiaping, a professor at Southeast University and an expert in civil engineering materials, and Sun Youhong, principal of the China University of Geosciences, have been selected as academicians of CAE.

Liu has been devoted to the research of shrinkage crack control and ultra-high performance of concrete. Functional civil engineering materials invented by Liu have been used in more than 110 projects, including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Taihu Lake tunnel.

Sun has been committed to the research of potential oil and gas resources drilling and bionic machines, and has undertaken more than 40 scientific research projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Land and Resources, Ministry of Education, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Since the founding of the Republic of China in 1949, a total of 52 Nantong natives have been elected as academicians, including 32 CAS academicians and 20 CAE academicians.
