Is it easy to make a colored wood-block painting? Here, painter Zhu Jianhui, head of the Qidong Woodblock Painting Academy in Nantong, details the creation process of the colored wood block painting In Winter.

First, Zhu sketched a rough image for the work, then prepared printing plates and polished their surfaces. With a variety of different tools, Zhu carved the sketched image into the surface printing plates.

Zhu made four plates for the image with different colors – red, blue, black, and yellow. He then printed the image in different colors over a piece of paper, and the printed paper is the finished colored wood-block painting work.
