The experimental saline soil rice planting base in the Fangling reclamation area of Bencha town, Rudong county, Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, saw a harvest of 19.55 tons of rice over 1.78 hectares of land on Oct 9. The average yield per ha was 10.97 tons.

"The actual yield is higher than expected. This variety of rice is high in quality, but its yield is a little lower than the 'Chaoyou 1000' planted last year and the other two varieties planted this year," said Yu Yongjie, deputy director of the Rudong county crop cultivation station. "An average yield of over 10.5 tons per ha is considered a high yield."

In 2020, the team led by Yuan Longping – known as the "father of hybrid rice" – set up 10 demonstration bases in China for planting sea rice – a high-yield rice with saline-alkaline resistance. It can grow on mudflats and saline-alkaline soil.

The Fangling reclamation area in Rudong county provides ideal conditions for the tests, which is why it was the only selected base in Jiangsu province. The experimental variety "Chaoyou 1000" planted last year achieved a stable average yield of over 120 tons per ha.

Inspired by last year's success, Yuan's team commissioned relevant departments in Rudong to transplant three new types of sea rice in June, striving to realize the industrialization of sea rice.
