Bencha town in Rudong county – administered by Nantong city in East China's Jiangsu province – is a national characteristic town and a leading historical and cultural town in China, with a profound history, distinctive folk culture and a wealth of gourmet restaurants and food outlets.
Last September, a renovation project for Bencha ancient town's core area was launched, mainly focusing on "one street, two banks, three alleys".
"One street" refers to Zhongshi Street. At the eastern end of the street is a stage, which will show Bencha's history and culture through drama. In order to restore the appearance of the old street to the greatest extent, not only was the stone surface of the street restored, but also the shops and the original old buildings along it were repaired and painstakingly renovated.
The facades of the shops along the banks of the Chaben River are currently under renovation. A dazzling light show – showcasing the town's charms through modern acousto-optic technologies – will reportedly be a significant feature of a Chaben River night tour.
There are over 50 alleys in Bencha ancient town, three of which were constructed as a key – a Buddhist alley, a tea alley and a painting alley.
Part of the renewed area will open to the public for trial during the National Day holiday this year and the entire street will open during the May Day holiday next year.
