An ancient meteorological observatory atop Junshan Mountain in Nantong was opened to the public for free on Dec 4 after its restoration project was completed.
The observatory was sponsored by Zhang Jian, a renowned industrialist and scholar in modern China and designed by Sun Zhixia, one of the first architectural designers in modern China.
Construction of the observatory started in 1914 and was completed in autumn in 1916. It officially started operating on Jan 1, 1917. It was the first in Jiangsu province to offer long-term weather forecasts.
Recognized by the national meteorological administration in 1997 as the first observatory built by the Chinese, the site of the observatory was listed as a key cultural relic under the protection of the Nantong government.
A meteorological exhibition is currently underway at the venue, displaying the history, functions, and instruments of the observatory.
At the mini 3D theater, visitors can view images and videos about the facility. The scenic area is also planning to work with local primary and middle schools to organize science education activities and provide more opportunities for students to learn about meteorology.
