The virtual graduation ceremony for the Renmin University of China class of 2020 was held in Mingde Square and broadcast by CCTV news on June 30.

Yan Han, a Qidong student of the College of Statistics, appeared in the live footage. In early February, Yan Han responded to calls from the university and Qidong Youth League to take an active role in fighting the pandemic. He went to the Hualian Neighborhood Committee without hesitation and signed up as a volunteer.

Wearing a blue vest, Yan started his daily work as a volunteer, taking the temperatures of residents at the entrance and exit of the neighborhood, registering their whereabouts, checking their health code and so on. The  work seems simple, but it made full use of Yan's sense of responsibility and patience.

Yan primarily worked as a translator to help facilitate communication with foreigners living in the neighborhood. He overcame his shyness in face-to-face communication and learnt a lot of pandemic-related vocabulary.

As a volunteer, Yan has experienced the joy of helping others, and the work has given him valuable life experience and increased his awareness of social values.
