Chongchuan develops urban agriculture
Chongchuan district in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, has been working to develop modern ecofriendly urban agriculture.
A professional vegetable cooperative has been established in the district to provide disabled people with more job opportunities and allow local residents to relax and experience the joy of agriculture.
Tang Li, who is in poor health, has been invited to help weed, spray insecticide, and pick fruits at the cooperative.
To date, 23 disabled people have found jobs at the cooperative and are paid according to their workload and working hours. A worker who plants vegetables will receive 50 yuan ($7.18) per day and an annual income of up to 12,000 yuan.
An incubation center has also been established to help farmers with disabilities learn about planting technology and improve their living conditions.
In addition, the district introduced a new online sales model in 2017. The model allows the public to adopt fruit trees using an online platform, and farmers at the plantation will take care of the trees for buyers. More than 100,000 yuan has been earned through this platform.
Students can also learn about agriculture at the plantation, and a seed museum is expected to be expanded soon.
