A group of primary school students visited a blue calico center in Chenqiao community, Gangzha district on Nov 9.

During their visit, local craftsman Jiang Ping taught the children about the history, techniques, and cultural value of the ancient art form and showcased his dyeing skills.

Chenqiao community is the birthplace and a major production area of polygonum tinctorium, a key material in the making of blue calico. The area has been growing the plant for more than 600 years.

In recent years, the local government has been working to protect the ancient art form by establishing a center devoted to preserving techniques and applying for status as a Nantong intangible cultural heritage item.

As of late, more people have begun promoting the art form under the guidance of local craftsmen.
