Women weave colorful ropes during the activity on July 6. It is said that people put the ropes on their roofs on the sixth day of the sixth month of the Chinese lunar calendar in hopes that magpies will take the ropes to the Milky Way and create a rainbow-like bridge for the annual reunion of Niulang and Zhinv during the Qixi Festival. The Qixi Festival, or Chinese Valentine’s Day, falls on the 7th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, in which the legend of the annual meeting between mythological figures of the Cowherd is celebrated.
