A Taiji softball demonstration was held at the Haohe River scenic area in Chongchuan district, Nantong, in eastern Jiangsu province, on July 2.

Taiji softball, also known as Tai Chi tennis, is a new sport and wellness tool which combines the modern game of tennis with the ancient Chinese tradition of Tai Chi.

More than 200 local senior citizens from the district’s Taiji softball club staged 10 demonstration performances during the event.

“I’ve been practicing the softball since 2005, which has helped me keep in good health,” said Cheng Fuyu, a 65-year-old retiree and director of the Taiji softball club.

Taiji softball has become popular with locals, especially the seniors, in recent years.

The event was hosted by the Nantong sports association of senior citizens and the administrative office of the scenic area. It aimed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and promote the sport to more people.
