The first Chinese idioms seminar was held in Rudong county, Nantong, Jiangsu province on April 27, attracting experts and scholars looking to discuss academic research.

The seminar was organized by the Chinese Idioms Research Institute of Jiangsu province, the Federation of Philosophy and Social sciences of Rudong county, and other local institutions.

Attendees discussed 16 essays on Chinese idioms, as well as standards for new Chinese idioms.

Two expressions, “zhi nv jue gang” and “zhi cheng tie ren”, were recognized as Chinese idioms during the seminar.

“Zhi nv jue gang” comes from Rudong county folklore. It tells the story of a local fish-woman and her lover, who dig a fishing port before a rising tide comes and then wait for the falling tide to take away the sediment.

The expression has garnered a lot of interest and will be promoted throughout the county.

Xu Dongjun, vice-governor of Rudong, noted that the local government plans to promote the use of Chinese idioms and integrate them with tourism development in order to attract more tourists.
