Chongchuan district has a profound civilization. Featuring unique culture of the river and sea areas, it is eminent in education, sports and historical heritage. Zhang Jian, one of the very best scholars in the late Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), advocated the idea of “education comes first, industrial practice follows”, which builds the good tradition of appreciating education and studying culture. Chongchuan district has given birth to over 20 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including the famous mathematician Yang Le, and over 20 renowned artists, like the great art master Fan Zeng. Eighteen world champions have emerged in the district, including seven Olympic champions. In addition to the first Chinese public museum, Nantong Museum, the district also home to 19 others.

Chongchuan district has a solid industrial foundation. In recent years, it has been vigorously implementing the strategy of “help and develop great industries and enterprises”. By promoting the improvement of industrial levels through agglomeration of superior enterprises, five industries have been developed, namely ship repair and building, equipment manufacturing, the light industry and food industry, electronic information and modern textiles. Meanwhile, Chongchuan district is striving to build itself into a regional modern service center that can affect the middle and the northern parts of Jiangsu province, and is taking full advantage of its concentrated urban functions and talents. Its urban economy development is focused on trade circulation, commercial service, science and technology service, modern logistics, and cultural tourism. Many famous enterprises nationwide and worldwide have come to settle in Chongchuan district, including Fortune 500 companies like Tyson Group and Acxiom from the United States, PYI Corporation Limited from Hong Kong, China Resources (Holdings) Co Ltd, Formosa Plastics Corporation from Taiwan and Shanghai Star Capital.
