Reputed as the “pearl on the Haohe River”, construction of the Nantong TV Tower began in 1985 and was completed in 1989. It is one of the earliest reinforced concrete towers in China, its shape giving a great sense of the optimistic times. It is the broadcast and TV transmission hinge and core hub of electronic signals in Nantong as well as one of the city’s urban landmarks. On November 16, 1986, Hu Yaobang, the then general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, happily inscribed the Nantong TV Tower name on a plaque to mark its future importance.
